Book binding tool
Tools such as this example dating from the 15th/16th century were used for decorating leather-bound books with blind tooling.
Widely used in medieval kitchens in making sauces that only needed a gentle heat, or to keep food warm, chafing dishes such as this would have been an important part of the abbey’s cooking. A burning piece of charcoal would have been placed in the base of the dish to warm the bowl above.

This comical “grotesque” head, with its bulging drilled eyes and wide mouth, drilled at the sides to show off its tongue, dates from the 11th to 12th century.
Pilgrim badges were popular during the later medieval period, when they were sold almost like souvenirs so a pilgrim could demonstrate where they had been.
